New school year...

September 9, 2016

Message from Mrs Anderson…

I am delighted to be able to welcome you all back to another school year following a hopefully enjoyable summer holiday with your families.  It is wonderful seeing the children come back looking so smart in their new uniforms-

The staff have been very busy getting the school and curriculum ready for the new classes.  During the holiday we have had more decorating in the school, the year 1 and 6 classrooms together with the canteen areas have been painted.  Years 5 and 6 have had new touch screen boards installed- I am sure the children will love them.  A new smoke detection system has been fitted throughout the school.  While you have been on holiday the school has been alive with a range of contactors!

I would like to take the opportunity to welcome and introduce some new staff to you.  Miss Money has joined the foundation team as a teaching assistant working with Miss Endicott and Mrs Benney.  Miss Broome will also be teaching in the school during the autumn term in year 2 and 3 while Mrs Potterton and Mrs Barnes have their PPA and leadership time.  I know they will be very happy working in our school.

Sadly Mrs Sullivan, our kitchen manager  has decided to leave CaterEd and St Paul’s.  Her last day is today and we wish her all the best and thank her enormously for her support and contribution to the school meals at our school.  We will all miss her.

After school clubs…

A letter will be sent out in the next couple of weeks in relation to a range of extra-curricular activities being run at the school.  With this letter you will have a copy of a letter from Mr Potterton about his Thursday evening drama group that will start in the second week of term, together with details about the Plymouth Argyle club that will also start in the second week.

Education Sunday…

Tomorrow is ‘Education Sunday’ and this will be a special Mass in the church- we are hoping that as many of you as possible will be able to join us for this Mass.  It will begin at the normal time of 5.30pm in the church.

London Experience 2016

It is not long now until the year 4 and 5 children embark on their journey to London- this is on Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st September.  Before we go I would like to have a meeting with all parents in relation to the visit.  This meeting will take place on Tuesday 13th September at 3.30pm.  It will be in the school hall- if you cannot make the meeting we will be able to share the PPT that is used.  I am sure that your children are really looking forward to the two days.

Residential for years 5 and 6

In year 6 there is a residential visit for the class.  The school has booked the venue and week for the next two years.  The residential will be at Adventure Okehampton for the next two years which we are really delighted about.  Mrs Stevenson and I would like to invite both year 5 and 6 parents to a meeting about the residential so that you have the information.  The current year 6 cohort will be going in July 2016 and the year 6 class for 2017/18 will be going in the September of their year.  Due to this we thought it would be good to meet with you all and give you the opportunity to start paying for this over an extended period of time.  Please come to the meeting on Tuesday 27th September 2016 at 3.30pm in the school hall.

Uniform…

Please ensure that your children are wearing the correct school uniform- all children in key stage 2 must to be wearing ties now.

Jewellery- please can you make sure that the children only wear ‘stud’ earrings to school, this is for health and safety reasons.  If they are not wearing these, they will be asked to remove them as it is our priority to keep everyone safe during the school day.  The only other item of jewellery allowed is a watch.

Nail varnish- Children should not be wearing nail varnish to school as it states in the handbook.  Please can you make sure this is removed if they put it on at weekends or during the holidays.  If children come to school wearing it they will be asked to remove it.

Thank you for your support with this- it is really appreciated.

Attendance…

As a school we improved our rates of attendance last academic year from 95.09 - 95.59% which is really good, however this is still below the target that all schools need to be striving for of 96%.  As a school we really need you to help support us with this as we are judged on this by Ofsted.  You will all be aware that the school will have an Ofsted inspection in the near future and we want to show that attendance figures are increasing at St Paul’s.  When children are away from school they miss key learning, this will in the short and long term affect their progress.  We completely understand when a child is ill but it is very difficult when days are unauthorised and people are on holiday.  Please support us with this.
