At St Paul's, we recognise that English skills underpin all elements of the school curriculum. Considering the fundamental importance of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing in everyday life, we are driven by the need to develop each learner’s writing ability, thus enabling them to play a full part in society.

 

From mark-making in Nursery to extended Writing across the curriculum in Year 6, the Teaching and Learning of Writing at St Paul's is an engaging and developmental process. As you browse our web pages, we are sure that you will be struck by the fantastic commitment of our pupils, parents and staff in developing this most important life-skill!

Handwriting

Formal handwriting skills will be taught regularly and systematically through the use of the PENPALS Handwriting scheme (Cambridge University Press). Five stages are identified and these form the basic organisation of the scheme:

1. Readiness for writing: gross and fine motor skills leading to letter formation (Foundation Stage)

2. Beginning to join (Lower KS1- Yr1 and 2)

3. Securing joins (Upper KS1/Lower KS2- Y2 and Y3)

4. Practising speed and fluency (Lower KS2- Y3 and Y4)

5. Presentation skills (Upper KS2- Y5 and Y6)

EARLY YEARS

In the Early Years Foundation Stage at St Paul's, children will develop their gross and fine motors skills which will set them up in good stead to acquire a legible and fluent handwriting style later on. Try some of these fun activities to develop fine motor skills at home.

Throughout the EYFS children will learn accurate formation of letters through the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme.

KEY STAGE ONE

Children will continue to develop fine and gross motor-skills with a range of multi-sensory activities. Teachers and support staff continue to guide children on correct letter formation using a comfortable tripod pencil grip that allows for efficient control. Through the PENPALS scheme children will begin to learn how to join letters in Year 1 and continue to practice this skill in Year 2.

KEY STAGE TWO

Children will continue to have regular practice of handwriting, securing the joins and developing speed and fluency. By the end of Year 6 pupils should have a clear, fluid handwriting style.
